R-1234yf
R-1234yf is a modern, eco-friendly hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerant
replacing older R-134a in automotive air conditioning systems, known for
its very low Global Warming Potential (GWP), making it much better for the
environment, though it’s classified as mildly flammable (A2L) and requires
specific handling, offering similar cooling performance to R-134a.
Key Characteristics
- Type : Hydrofluoroolefin (HFO)
- Primary Use : Automotive air conditioning (A/C).
- Environmental Impact : Extremely low GWP, significantly reducing climate impact compared to R-134a.
- Safety : Mildly flammable (A2L classification), non-toxic, and efficient.
- Performance : Similar cooling performance to R-134a, often more energy-efficient.
- Brands : Marketed as Opteon YF by Chemours and Solstice yf by Honeywell.
Why it is used
- Regulatory Compliance : Meets stricter environmental regulations (like the EU MAC Directive) phasing out high-GWP refrigerants.
- Sustainability : Helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of vehicles.
Handling & Service
- Requires specialized equipment for recovery, leak testing, and recharge due to its mild flammability.
- Specific service procedures, including mandatory leak checks, are part of the process for R-1234yf systems.

Quick Air Conditioning FAQs
How long does a regas last?
Years if the system’s healthy; if it leaks, we fix that first so you’re not back next week.
Can you do it today?
Often, yes — seals/valves are common; we’ll quote compressors/condensers on the spot.
